Understanding of Woofer Designing and Manufacturing

A woofer is commonly known as a loudspeaker driver designed to produce low-frequency sound. It can produce sounds ranging from about 40 hertz to about 1 kilohertz or more. The name comes from the barking of dogs, woof in contrast with the tweeter. The name was given to speakers designed to reproduce high-frequency sound.

The most common design for woofers is the electrodynamic driver. These use a cone powered by a voice coil surrounded by a magnetic field. The combination of a voice coil and magnet forms a linear electric motor.

And when current flows through the voice coil, the coil moves with respect to the frame, pushing or pulling the driver cone in the same way that the coil does a piston. The voice coil is attached to the back of the speaker cone using adhesive. The resulting movement of the cone creates sound waves as it moves in and out.

Designing and manufacturing woofers is a difficult task. While designing a woofer, keep in mind the following: By controlling the movement of the cone, the electrical signal to the woofer voice coil is reliably reproduced by the sound waves generated by the movement of the cone. Controlling electrical impedance, a measure of resistance to sinusoidal alternating current is a difficult task. This is to enable the use of economical electronic amplifiers.

A good woofer design should effectively convert the low-frequency amplifier signal into mechanical air movement with high effort and maximum efficiency. It is complicated by the need to use a loudspeaker enclosure to link the cone motion to the air.

Cone materials have their advantages and disadvantages. The three common high-quality attributes designers look for in cones are light weight, stiffness, and lack of coloration. Exotic materials like Kevlar and magnesium are light and stiff, but depending on their manufacture and design, ringing problems can arise. Paper and various other polymers, including coated paper cones, are generally less resonant than metal diaphragms but may be heavier and less stiff.

But how are frames designed? The frame or basket is the structure that holds the cone, voice coil, and magnet in power alignment. Since the voice coil gap is very narrow, it is important to prevent the voice coil from rubbing against the magnetic structure of the gap and to avoid external movement.

There are two types of metal frames: stamped and cast. Stamped baskets, usually made of steel, are an inexpensive option. And the downside of this frame is that the basket can bend when the speaker volume is high. Cast baskets are more expensive but more rigid in all directions. Cast baskets have better damping and can be more complex in shape, so they are generally preferred for their higher quality. Woofers designed for public addresses and musical instruments are similar in construction to home audio woofers.
